ARC Review: Guarding Angel by S.L. Saboviec

Title: Guarding Angel
Author: S.L. Saboviec
Series: Fallen Redemption (#1)
Publication Date: May 19, 2014
Genre(s): Fantasy, Romance, Paranormal, YA

Guardian angel Enael can’t seem to keep her human Wards in check. They’re the ones who choose their paths before reincarnating—she’s just there to help make sure they stay on track. But it’s not as easy as it might look.
When she meets and falls in love with charismatic Kaspen, a fellow Guardian, Enael’s feelings about Heaven, Hell, demons, and the life she’s known are turned upside down. Worse, angel-turned-demon Yasva, Kaspen’s former love, still holds him in her clutches. Even as Yasva works toward obtaining complete control of Earth, she taunts and haunts Kaspen’s and Enael’s lives.
Now Enael is forced to face her past (which is centuries long and bursting with secrets), her present (which is terribly unfulfilling and full of questions), and her future (which becomes more uncertain as time passes). Armed with a newfound love and fear of losing it all, she must figure out how to save the world—-and the angel she loves. Which side will win? Who will Kaspen choose? Will Heaven and Earth continue to exist, or will everything go to Hell?

When I first did the cover reveal for Guarding Angel and spent minutes just staring at the amazing cover and reading the synopsis, I knew that it was a book that I just had to get my hands on.

Guardian Angel is about these angels who have humans (called their Wards in the book) to not protect, but influence the way they think to lead them on the right path. The plot of Guarding Angel is actually quite complex, as it's not only focusing on the main character, but there are lots of things happening around the Angels as well. The book is written from the the Guardian Angel, Enael's perspective. Enael is an angel that struggles with connecting with her Wards every time, and she tries to figure out why and how to get her Wards to listen to her.

But when I actually started reading it, it wasn't as good as expected, but still alright. And so, I kept on reading.

Guarding Angel has a complex plot. Things were confusing at first in the beginning, but once you got over the first few chapters, things started to clear up a lot more and the book got a bit more enjoyable, if you stuck around for that long. In this book, it kind of felt that there were three plots happening at the same time, such as how Enael has THREE Wards in the book, and then the last part was this really confusing war happening because Yasava wanted to take over the world and blah blah blah, so typical for the evil person. Actually, all the characters kind of sucked. And the ending was kind of bad. It just kind of left the story there, like a cliffhanger badly written.

The world building was good enough. It seemed real, that you could actually image these angels that are protecting you and influencing your thoughts. As for the characters, it was kind of the opposite. I couldn't really relate to any of the characters at all. They seemed so bland and I just couldn't connect. I felt that Enael's character was boring and I just didn't really like Kaspen. The romance between them also felt like it was not that believable, or in other words, forced.

I also found this book a bit boring at times. As much as I do enjoy romance and the paranormal genre, I like books that have a lot of action and suspense. For example, there are a lot of times where Enael just rambles on and on about her duties, how hot Kaspen is and all that.

You could say that I'm very biased, because comparing Guarding Angel to other angel and demon books, Guarding Angel just didn't exactly achieve what I was looking for.

  2. I totally got entranced by the cover, too. But after reading your review, I don't know if it'd be an enjoyable read for me. The boring parts would drag by for me!

    1. No problem Kristen! I guess I'd say that the book was alright, but if you're the kind of person who loves books that jump right into action, then I perhaps this isn't the best book!

    1. Nah, I don't think so :( I'm a lover of books that have tons of action and this one wasn't one of them. I might in the future, but right now I don't really have any intention to reading the rest of the series, but I do wonder what it'll be about. If it's either Yasva trying to take over the world again and Enael with another Ward then thanks but no thanks! :D

  5. I didn't like the cover at all, actually! But the description of the book makes it sound quite interesting. Now, your review - not so much. Is it a love triangle I sense coming on in the next books? :)

    1. Really! Well I do think the cover looks very nice :) I need to stop being a cover junkie. I really do.

I think you could say that there is a love triangle, but it's written not that well. To be honest, I didn't even think of the romance as a love triangle before your comment, but there is! :)
